Farmer commits suicide as he ran into mounting debts

Thanjavur: A 65-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his sugarcane field at Semmangudi village in Thiruvaiyaru taluk today.

The deceased, Selvaraj, son of Sundaram and resident of Anaikudi village resorted to this extreme step as he reportedly ran into mounting debts.

Selvaraj who owned a total of six and a half acres of land in three different places had recently supplied 127 tonnes of sugarcane to Arignar Anna Sugarmill, a public sector undertaking (PSU), at Kurungulam village near Thanjavur. For which the sugarmill owes Rs 3.49 lakh to Selvaraj besides an outstanding of Rs 61,200 towards State Advisory Price (SAP) pertaining to last year.

Meanwhile, Selvaraj had now raised sugarcane in 6.5 acres of lands located at Semmangudi and Anaikudi villages respectively after borrowing money from others. He had also sent his second son Karthikeyan to Singapore a few months ago for employment after borrowing money from others, sources said.

Selvaraj reportedly returned home drunk last night and this led to a quarrel between him and his wife. Then,  he left for his field to irrigate the crops. On Thursday morning, he was found dead by hanging.

Selvaraj is survived by his wife Rajathi (58) and three sons namely Gavaskaran (35), Karthikeyan (29) and Ilayaraja (27).

His family members claimed that he had resorted to this extreme step due to mounting debts.

On being informed, Thiruvaiyaru police rushed there, retrieved his body and sent it to government hospital for postmortem
