Four fishermen injured after being attacked by SL navy in mid sea off Kodiakarai

Nagapattinam: Four fishermen, hailing from Arcotthruai near Vedaranyam, were injured and two of them were hospitalized after they were severely attacked by SriLankan navy in mid sea off Kodiakarai.

A group of four fishermen, all hailing from Arcotthurai hamlet, set out for fishing in a fiberglass boat, owned by Tamilselvan (55) of the same village, on Wednesday afternoon.



The fishermen had reportedly anchored the boat and cast their nets in waters southeast off Kodiakarai on Wednesday night when the SriLankan naval personnel arrived there in a vessel and brutally attacked the four fishermen with canes. The SriLankan naval personnel left from there after giving  a stern warning to the fishermen not to fish in the area again.

In the attack, all the four fishermen namely D Kumarasamy (48), P Senthil (35), M Kalaimani (24) and Amudhakumar (50) suffered internal injuries in their hands and thighs.

The four fishermen reached ashore in Vedaranyam at 11 pm on Wednesday and reported the incident to the village elders as well as the officials of fisheries department.

Senthil and Kumarasamy who suffered severe injuries were immediately admitted to Government Hospital in Vedaranyam. Later, they were shifted to Government Hospital in Nagapattinam.
