Construction of Flyover Near New Bus Terminal in Coimbatore Begins

Construction work for a new flyover near Sai Baba Temple in Coimbatore has commenced, starting with excavation near the new bus terminal on September 17. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Coimbatore: The national highways (NH) wing of the state highways department has commenced the construction of a new flyover on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road. The project, which began on Monday, aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area.

The flyover will span a distance of 975 metres from Alagesan Road Junction to Eru company, with a width of 16.61 metres. It is designed to accommodate four lanes of traffic, enhancing the road's capacity significantly. The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has allocated Rs 75.05 crore for the construction of this flyover.

According to officials from the NH wing, the project will be executed in three distinct phases. The initial phase involves excavating deep pits to establish six pillars. In total, the flyover will comprise 23 pillars and 22 decks. The contractor, KCP Infra Ltd, has been instructed to deploy additional workforce to operate round the clock, ensuring timely completion of the project within the projected two-year timeframe.

One of the key advantages of this project is that it does not require any land acquisition. With seven metres of space available on either side of the road, traffic diversion has not been necessary. While the flow of traffic is not expected to be significantly disrupted, officials anticipate a slight deceleration during peak hours.

This new flyover will be the third on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road within city limits, joining the existing ones at Kavundampalayam and GN Mills. The NH wing is also planning other infrastructure improvements in the city. Funds have been sanctioned for the construction of a flyover at Singanallur on Trichy Road, with the retendering process set to begin soon.

Additionally, plans for a flyover at Saravanampatti on the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road are under consideration. However, this project may face delays due to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited's (CMRL) plans to erect pillars in the same stretch for the metro rail project. NH wing officials are awaiting CMRL's approval before proceeding with the tendering process for the Saravanampatti flyover.

These infrastructure projects are part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and connectivity in Coimbatore, addressing the growing needs of the city's expanding population and increasing vehicular traffic.
