Two houses gutted in fire as miscreants hurled petrol bombs

Tiruvarur: Two houses were gutted in fire near Mannargudi after some miscreants had hurled petrol bombs and set fire early today as a girl studying in college had eloped with her lover.

Sources said that Aishwarya, resident of Karunavoor near Mannargudi who was studying final year of her degree course in a private college in Athirampattinam went mysteriously missing.

Aishwarya who left for college to write examinations some ten days ago did not return home. As she could not be traced despite an intensive search in all known places, her father Sambasivam lodged a complaint at Perugavazhnthan police station.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Aishwarya eloped with Manoj, resident of Pambukani area, who was also studying in the same college. Following which, Sambasivam went to Manoj’s house and picked up a quarrel with Manoj’s father Sivakumar charging his son with abducting his daughter and reportedly threatened him.

Meanwhile, the houses of Sivakumar and his brother Ramadas went up in flames early today. Valuables worth Rs 10 lakh including 30 sovereigns of jewels were gutted in fire. On being informed, fire and rescue service personnel from Muthupettai rushed there and extinguished the fire after battling for over two hours.

Based on complaint by Sivakumar and Ramadas, Perugavazhnthan police have registered a case and further investigation is on.

Meanwhile, irate relatives of Ramadas resorted to road blockade on the busy Mannargudi-Muthupettai road disrupting traffic for nearly an hour.

They alleged that the miscreants had set fire to their house after hurling petrol bomb, and demanded their immediate arrest. Police rushed there, held talks with the agitators and peruaded them to call off their stir assuring to take suitable action in this regard.
