Women in Funeral Attire Submit Petition to Coimbatore District Collector

Women from Telungupalayam area petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector, wearing funeral attire, demanding action against threats and obstacles to their settlement on newly allotted land.

Coimbatore: On Wednesday around noon, a group of women in funeral attire submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector, highlighting a pressing issue in the Telungupalayam area of Vengadapuram, located on Tadagam Road.

The Adi Dravidar Welfare Department had recently issued pattas (land ownership documents) to about 100 people in Telungupalayam. However, it is reported that some individuals whose pattas were cancelled in 2000 continue to reside in the area. The newly allotted patta holders are now facing obstacles and death threats from these residents as they attempt to construct houses and settle on their legally allocated land.

The petitioners, dressed in white with cloth draped over their heads in the manner of a funeral procession, urged the District Collector to intervene and resolve the situation. They complained that when they approach officials about the issue, they are directed to file a police complaint. However, when they go to the police, they are redirected to the concerned officials, leaving them caught in a cycle of bureaucratic run-around.

The women emphasized the urgent need for action to ensure their safety and right to settle on the land legally allocated to them. They demanded that the District Collector take immediate steps to address the threats and remove the obstacles preventing them from building their homes and residing on their rightfully allotted property.
