Coimbatore: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced that Padma Shri Pappammal, a 107-year-old organic farmer from Thekkampatti village in Coimbatore district, will be honored with the prestigious 'Periyar Award' at the party's upcoming Mupperum Vizha (Triple Grand Festival).

The award ceremony will take place on September 17, 2024, at the YMCA grounds in Nandanam, Chennai, as part of the DMK's Diamond Jubilee year celebrations. This annual event serves as a platform for the party to recognize and felicitate individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

Pappammal, hailing from the Mettupalayam assembly constituency, has been a pioneer in promoting organic farming practices. Her dedication to sustainable agriculture and her vast experience spanning over a century have earned her national recognition, including the Padma Shri award from the Government of India.

The selection of Pappammal for the 'Periyar Award' highlights the DMK's commitment to acknowledging grassroots leaders and their contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development. This recognition is expected to inspire younger generations to embrace eco-friendly farming techniques and preserve traditional agricultural knowledge.

The Mupperum Vizha, a significant event in the DMK's calendar, will see party members and supporters from across Tamil Nadu gathering to celebrate the organization's achievements and reaffirm its ideological commitments.
