Elephant falls prey to marsh at Sembikarai

In the recent past, quite a few elephants have fallen prey to muck and marshes due to the severe scarcity of water and fodder in the forests.

On 26th April, a female elephant aged about 10 years died at Sembikarai, a hamlet near Annaikatti.

The district forest officer of the region explained, “The elephant was trapped in mud with its head inside the marsh and only its trunk was visible. Forest officers attempted to extricate it with a JCB, however they did not succeed as a lot of mud had entered its mouth already. The elephant died despite the best efforts of the forest officials. Postmortem has also been arranged.”
