Coimbatore: Customs officials at the Coimbatore International Airport have seized gold worth 1 crore rupees that was smuggled on an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah. The officials are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.

Acting on a tip-off about gold smuggling on the Sharjah-Coimbatore Air Arabia flight, customs officials at Coimbatore airport carried out a thorough search operation. Initially, they searched the passengers' belongings but found no gold. The officials then proceeded to inspect the aircraft itself.

During the search of the aircraft's interior, customs officials discovered suspicious packages adhered to the floor area. Upon closer examination, they found gold biscuits wrapped in tape and securely fastened to the inside of the aircraft with double-sided adhesive tape.

The seized gold was identified as 24-carat pure gold bars. Customs officials have calculated the total weight of the gold bars to be 1399 grams, with an estimated value of approximately 1.02 crore rupees.

As no passengers have come forward to claim ownership of the seized gold, customs officials are continuing their investigation to trace the origins and intended recipients of the smuggled precious metal. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by airport authorities in combating gold smuggling operations.
