Two Drown in Quarry Near Pollachi, Including School Student

A government school student and a coconut picker drowned in a water-filled quarry near Pollachi on Sunday. The incident occurred when they went for a swim in the stagnant water.



Coimbatore: A tragic incident unfolded near Pollachi on Sunday when two individuals, including a young government school student, drowned in a water-filled stone quarry. The victims were identified as Vigneswaran, 28, a coconut picker from Kinathukadavu, Singayanputhur area, and Vishnu, a second-grade student at a government school.

Vigneswaran, who was separated from his wife and children, took his relative Prabu's son Vishnu to the quarry for a swim. As they were bathing in the stagnant water, they suddenly moved to a deeper area and began struggling for their lives.

Hearing their cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene and managed to pull both individuals out of the water. However, by the time they were rescued, both Vigneswaran and Vishnu were unconscious. They were immediately taken to the Pollachi Government Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

The Kinathukadavu Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the incident. The tragic deaths of the young student and the daily wage worker have cast a pall of sorrow over the local community.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by abandoned quarries and highlights the need for increased safety measures and public awareness to prevent such accidents in the future.
