Farmers Protest Unauthorized Water Release to Marulpatti Kulam Near Udumalaipettai

Farmers near Udumalaipettai express shock and anger over sudden unauthorized water release to Marulpatti Kulam from Thirumoorthy Dam irrigation canal, demanding investigation into the incident.

Coimbatore: Farmers near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district were caught off guard when water was unexpectedly released to the Marulpatti Kulam from the Thirumoorthy Dam irrigation canal. The incident has sparked outrage among the agricultural community, who are now demanding an investigation into the unauthorized water release.

On January 18, water was released from the Thirumoorthy Dam for the second zonal year irrigation, scheduled for four rounds.

While water was flowing through the Udumalaipettai canal for irrigation purposes, it was also directed to the Marulpatti branch canal. The sudden diversion of water to the local tank shocked farmers in the area.

Farmers expressed their concerns, stating that water from Thirumoorthy Dam reaches the Marulpatti irrigation canal only once every two years. They pointed out that sometimes, water doesn't even reach the tail-end of the canal. The farmers alleged that in recent days, the canal was breached, and water was diverted to the tank without proper authorization.

As farmers voiced their strong opposition to this unauthorized release, Public Works Department (PWD) officials arrived at the scene and halted the water flow to the Kulam. They proceeded to seal the breach using sandbags to prevent further diversion.

The farming community is now urging senior PWD officials to conduct an on-site inspection to determine who authorized the irregular water release and who was responsible for diverting the water. They are demanding appropriate action be taken against those found responsible for this unauthorized act, which could potentially affect their irrigation schedules and crop yields.
