Sugarcane farmers stage demo protesting non-disbursal of Rs 35 crore

THANJAVUR: A group of aggrieved sugarcane farmers , holding dried sugarcanes in arms, staged a slogan shouting demonstration in front of the Arignar Anna sugar mill, a public sector undertaking (PSU), at Kurungulam near here today pressing a charter of demands that included that the sugarmill immediately disburse the outstanding amount to the tune of Rs 35 crore owed to the sugarcane farmers for the supply of sugarcane to the mill during the year 2015-2016.

Led by Sugarcane Producers Association president R Ramasamy, the agitating farmers staged a slogan shouting demonstration pressing their demands.

“The PSU still owes an outstanding amount of Rs 35 crore to the famers for the supply of sugarcane. The sugar mill has not paid the outstanding amount to the farmers despite various agitations”, Ramasamy said.

In 2010, foundation stone was laid for cogeneration of power and expansion of sugarmill at an estimated cost of Rs 115 crore. These works should have been completed in 18 months but power was not yet generated despite the elapse of seven years, Ramasamy said.

Ramasamy also said that Tamil Nadu government had not convened the tri-party meeting for the past seven years and urged the State government to immediately convene the meeting and announce the sugarcane price as Rs 4,000 per tonne.
