National Green Tribunal Orders Report on Permanent Solution for Vellalore Dump Yard in Coimbatore by September 3

The National Green Tribunal has directed Coimbatore Corporation to submit a report on implementing a permanent solution for the Vellalore dump yard by September 3, following non-compliance with previous orders.

Coimbatore: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to submit a report by September 3 on establishing a permanent solution for the Vellalore dump yard. This directive comes after the corporation failed to comply with the NGT's 2018 order to clear the dump yard and did not fulfill its promise to resolve the issue within a year.

Due to the corporation's non-compliance, Eswaran, leader of the Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam, filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal in Delhi in 2022. The case was subsequently transferred to the Chennai Green Tribunal for ongoing hearings.

During the hearing on the 14th, the Green Tribunal questioned the Coimbatore Corporation about its failure to eliminate old waste within a year as promised, despite six years having passed. Consequently, the Tribunal has ordered the corporation to submit a clear and detailed report on this matter before the next hearing.

The Green Tribunal has also instructed the Principal Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department to arrange a meeting with the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner to reach a resolution on this issue.

The next hearing for this case has been adjourned to September 3.

In a statement released by Eswaran, leader of the Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam, he accused the Coimbatore Corporation of providing false information to the Green Tribunal during the hearing on the 14th. He alleged that the corporation falsely claimed to have established Micro Composting Centres (MCC) at 36 locations, each managing 5 tons of waste. Eswaran further accused the corporation of providing misleading information to the Tribunal, stating that waste dumping at Vellalore had reduced from 81% to 18%.

Eswaran has emphasized that the Coimbatore Corporation should submit an action plan report with a specific timeline to the Green Tribunal before the next hearing.
