Indian Medical Association Announces Nationwide Withdrawal of Services Following Tragic Sexual Assault Incident at Kolkata Medical College

A young post-graduate doctor was brutally raped and killed while on duty at R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata, leading to nationwide protests and a 24-hour service withdrawal by modern medicine doctors. Kolkata witnessed mass hooliganism unleashed on its streets today.

Coimbatore: In a shocking incident, a young post-graduate student of chest medicine was brutally raped and killed while on duty at R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata, in the early hours of 9th August 2024. The tragic event has sent shockwaves across the medical fraternity and the nation, prompting widespread protests. Resident doctors across the country, supported by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), have taken to the streets in solidarity, organizing candle marches and strikes.

The incident, which occurred under the alleged negligence of the college authorities and with delayed police investigation, has raised concerns about the safety and protection of doctors, especially women, in medical institutions. Despite the initial investigation, progress stalled after the first day, leading to further unrest.

On 13th August 2024, the Calcutta High Court intervened, directing the state police to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation. The court also highlighted the potential risk of evidence tampering if the state police continued with the case. The situation escalated on 15th August 2024, when the hospital premises were vandalized by a large crowd, resulting in extensive damage and attacks on protesting medical students.

Doctors, particularly female healthcare workers, remain vulnerable to violence due to the nature of their profession. The IMA has urged authorities to ensure the safety of doctors within hospitals and on campuses, emphasizing that physical assaults and crimes reflect the insensitivity of those in charge towards the needs of healthcare workers.

In response to the brutal crime and the subsequent violence against students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association has declared a nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine. The 24-hour strike will commence at 6 am on Saturday, 17th August 2024, and conclude at 6 am on Sunday, 18th August 2024. While essential services will be maintained, routine OPDs will be closed, elective surgeries will be postponed, and casualty services will not be available.

The IMA has called on the public to support this cause, emphasizing the need to address the grievances of doctors who serve the nation under increasingly dangerous conditions.
