3-language formula here to stay: Naidu

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu has urged students to learn their mother tongue, Hindi and English to improve their prospects.

“The three-language formula is the government’s policy. Learn mother tongue, English and Hindi. What was agreed upon during the [successive Prime Ministers] Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi periods is being implemented,” Mr. Naidu said while addressing media persons on the sidelines of the silver jubilee convocation ceremony at Sri Ramachandra University on Sunday.
‘Hindi is useful’

Stating that the three-language formula was here to stay, he added that there was no question of forcing Hindi on anybody. “Learning Hindi will be useful. Even I have learnt Hindi. Now I am able to speak in Hindi across the country, especially in the north. Students should learn their mother tongue, English and Hindi, the national language,” he said.

Contending that some parties were trying to use this issue to create a political controversy, he said, “We have seen enough of it all these years. Instead of learning our mother tongue, we are learning English. I am for learning mother tongue.”
