Fishermen Demand Fishing Rights, Submit Petition with Nets

Fishermen from Ukkadam Periyakulam and Valangulam areas in Coimbatore submitted a petition to the District Collector, demanding fishing rights in tanks under the Coimbatore Block Fishermen Cooperative Society.

Coimbatore: Fishermen from Ukkadam Periyakulam and Valangulam areas in Coimbatore arrived at the District Collector's office with their fishing nets to submit a petition demanding fishing rights in tanks under the jurisdiction of the Coimbatore Block Fishermen Cooperative Society.

In their petition, the fishermen stated that they have been fishing as members of the Coimbatore Block Fishermen Cooperative Society for many years. They mentioned that fishing rights and lease contracts for algae cultivation are typically granted to society members every five years. Upon expiration of these contracts, all fishermen have been allowed to fish in all tanks under the society's purview.

However, the petitioners accused the current president of the Coimbatore Block Fishermen Cooperative Society, Balamurugan, of colluding with a select group of fishermen and denying permission for others to fish in certain tanks. They alleged that Balamurugan threatens them when they attempt to fish in these tanks.

The fishermen emphasized that this situation has severely affected the livelihoods of a majority of fishing families in the area. They urged the District Collector to intervene in the matter and ensure that all members of the Coimbatore Block Fishermen Cooperative Society are granted permission to fish in all tanks under the society's jurisdiction.

The protesting fishermen hope that their unique approach of bringing their fishing nets along with the petition will draw attention to their plight and prompt swift action from the district administration to resolve the issue.
