Peak hour traffic was hit on Mudichur Road in Tambaram on Thursday as the road caved in due to ‘loose soil’.
The road was dug up by a few days ago for laying pipelines for underground drainage work and the soil was not filled properly by the workers after road work completion.
Loose soil and heavy flow of traffic resulted in the road caving in. A five-foot deep crater was formed and traffic on Mudichur Road was diverted via GST Road.
Office-goers returning to their homes in Mudichur, Old Perungalathur, Mannivakkam and Manimanagalam had to take a detour.
Buses to Mannivakkam, Sriperumbudur and Padappai were diverted via Vandalur bridge and restoration work was in full swing, said a municipal official.
