95 persons held for blocking train protesting construction of subway

Ramanathapuram: Tension prevailed for a while at Kooriyur village near here as the local residents blocked the Rameswaram-Madurai passenger train today protesting the ongoing construction of subway by railway authorities.

The agitators, led by BJP state vice-president Suba Nagarajan , squatted on the railway track and blocked the train. Following which, police arrested 95 persons including fifty nine women.

Railway authorities have undertaken the construction of the subway at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore in full swing despite stiff opposition by the local residents who demand construction of railway gate instead of the subway stating that Kooriyur being a low-lying area, water would enter the subway during rainy season making it difficult for people to use it.

As railway authorities went ahead with construction of subway ignoring the opposition, the local residents today squatted on the railway track and blocked the Rameswaram-Madurai passenger train. Majority of the agitators were women.

Police rushed there, held talks  with the agitators and attempted to persuade them to call off their stir but to no avail. Following which, police arrested all of them.
