Recently, during the road expansion project on the Coimbatore - Pollachi highways, thousands of trees were cut for the sake of expansion of highways. Unfortunately, only a handful of trees got a new lease of life as they were transplanted to Corporation reserve sites and private educational institutions' land which is now the new homes for those trees. If properly planned, at least a few hundreds of trees could have been saved, say the environmentalists. But nothing is too late...!
However, transplanting trees is gaining momentum in the city. Even yesterday, a Peepal tree at the Gandhipuram over-bridge construction site that was about to be felled was saved by the environmentalists and NGOs. The 60-year-old tree was meticulously transplanted to the Coimbatore Central Jail premise.
Corporation and NGO 'Osai' carefully uprooted the trees with the help of a JCB and a crane and decided it to re-plant it. They arranged for these trees to be fixed in the PRS grounds, but due to the thickness of the soil, they were unable to plant the trees. It was then decided to plant these trees in the Central Prison compound.

Speaking on this, Osai Syed said, 'Trees are the reason for our existence. Hence, the answer to the question, what will happen if trees are continuously cut, is so simple. Human race will also die. Transplanting the trees extends the life of the trees. For example, the Peepal tree that is now been transplanted to the central prison premise is just 60-year-old, whereas the Peepal tree species can live upto 1000 years, says report. So by transplanting the tree, the tree will live upto another 940 years. None of us might be able to witness it's survival till the last but the tree will continue to serve it's purpose.
Though we have lost lakhs of trees within a decades time, nothing is too late. City Corporation, forest department and all concerned government officials are helping NGOs like us in transplanting the trees to amicable locations. As this transplantation process requires manpower and equipment support, there is a cost involved to this transplantation process and we are glad that Corporation has supported us with all these requirements.
This Peepal tree will take another 45-60 days to show signs of well-accustomed to the new locale. New leaves and twigs will start sprouting within that time frame. Our team will continue to monitor the tree and enhance it's growth through organic manures and growth boosters.'

Due to its enormity, the Peepal tree got stuck at the entrance. Later on, the team meticulously planned and transplanted the Pipal tree to a fitting area that was already dug area at the Central Jail compound.
