Toor Dal Prices Soar in Coimbatore, Impacting Household Budgets

Coimbatore witnesses a sharp rise in toor dal prices, jumping from ₹140 to ₹195 per kg. Other groceries also see significant price hikes, affecting consumers' budgets.

Coimbatore: The city is experiencing a steep increase in the prices of essential groceries, particularly toor dal, causing concern among residents. Typically, grocery prices in Tamil Nadu fluctuate seasonally, with increases from September to December, followed by a decline in January and stability until April-May. However, this year has seen a continuous upward trend in prices.

Toor dal, a staple in many households, has seen a dramatic price hike. In April, it was priced at ₹140 per kilogram. Last month, it increased to ₹160, and now it has further escalated to ₹195 per kilogram, shocking consumers.

Other groceries have also witnessed significant price increases. Black pepper has risen from ₹600 to ₹780, sundal from ₹70 to ₹110, cashews from ₹550 to ₹850, cardamom from ₹1800 to ₹3000, and peas from ₹80 to ₹130.

The surge in prices of most groceries and vegetables in Coimbatore's grain markets has substantially impacted the public, straining household budgets.

A local trader explained the situation, stating that toor dal is primarily imported from Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. He attributed the price hike to reduced crop yields due to rainfall, resulting in decreased supply of food grains to the market.

The trader further noted that prices of cashews, cardamom, garlic, and peas have also increased. He predicted that there is little chance of a decrease in grain prices until November-December.

The continuous rise in essential commodity prices has left Coimbatore residents grappling with increased living costs, with no immediate relief in sight.
