Life Sentence for Laborer Who Raped 9-Year-Old Student in Coimbatore

A 54-year-old laborer in Coimbatore's Podanur area was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old student multiple times in 2017. The verdict was delivered by the POCSO Special Court.


Coimbatore: A 54-year-old daily wage laborer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old student in Coimbatore. The verdict was delivered by Judge Kulasekharan at the POCSO Special Court on July 15.

The convict, identified as Selvaraj alias Vellaiyan, a resident of the Podanur area in Coimbatore, lured the young girl with chocolates in 2017. He then took her to his house near where she was playing and sexually assaulted her multiple times.

The incident came to light when the victim confided in her school teacher. The teacher promptly informed the Child Welfare Committee, who in turn filed a complaint at the All Women Police Station. Following the complaint, the police arrested Selvaraj under the POCSO Act.

The case had been under trial at the Coimbatore POCSO Special Court. Upon completion of the trial, Judge Kulasekharan pronounced the verdict on July 15. The court found Selvaraj guilty of raping the minor girl and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Additionally, a fine of Rs. 10,000 was imposed on the convict.

This verdict sends a strong message against child sexual abuse and emphasizes the judicial system's commitment to protecting minors from such heinous crimes.
