Funds granted to Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College to carry out research project

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College has been granted and funded with a sum of Rs.118 Lakhs for the research project titled “Technology Development of Recycling of Aluminium (scraps) Alloys for Industrial Applications” by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the scheme of Technology System Development Programme. The fund received will be utilized to develop the “Technology Development of Recycling of Aluminium scraps suitable for Industrial Applications”. The project will be carried jointly with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram.

A press release from this educational institution stated that this project aims to establish equipment setup to process the aluminium scrap for melting and refining, to study the distribution of aluminium and other inclusions through metallurgical examinations and also to establish technical know-how for recycling of aluminium alloys for Industrial applications.

The present work proposes initial cleaning, drying and mixing of suitable additives for refining the output to get graded aluminium to use for the intended engineering applications. An integrated 100 kgs capacity melting, holding and refining setups along with the preparatory equipments namely crushing cum shredding, industrial scrap washing and heating oven along with porosity tester have been established in the Center for Aluminium Recycling.

The center was inaugurated by K.Ramasamy - Chairman, M/s Roots group of Industries in presence of V.Ramakrishna - Chief Operating Officer , SNR Sons Charitable Trust. The chief guest in his inaugural address spoke about the vital importance of fundamental research. “Students have immense capability but they need to be guided and encouraged accordingly. Engineers need to be employable. Students should keep a goal to become the best in whatever field they choose. Innovation can happen only with In-depth knowledge. To gain expertise students should be patient enough to learn.” he said.

Dr. A. Ebenaer Jeyakumar-Director (Academics) made the opening remarks of the event Dr.P.Karuppuswamy- Professor and Head, Mechanical Engineering department briefed the project and Dr.N.Alamelu-Principal proposed the vote of thanks.

Principal Investigator is C.Bhagyanathan, AP(Sr.G), Mechanical, Co-Principal Investigators are Dr.P.Karuppuswamy, Professor and Head Mechanical Engineering, Dr.M.Ravi - Sr.Principal Scientist, CSIR-NIIST, Trivendram.
