Senior Councillors Vie for Coimbatore Mayor Post

Coimbatore Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar resigned on July 3, citing health reasons. Senior councillors are now actively pursuing the vacant position, seeking meetings with CM and Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chennai.

Coimbatore: In a surprising turn of events, Coimbatore Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar resigned from her post on July 3, citing health reasons. The resignation has sparked a flurry of activity among senior councillors who are now vying for the prestigious position.

Sources reveal that several senior councillors have been camping in Chennai for the past two days, seeking appointments with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Their aim is to lobby for the now-vacant mayoral position.

Kalpana Anandakumar, who was elected as the mayor of Coimbatore in the 2022 local body elections, also serves as the councillor for Ward 19. Her resignation letter was reportedly handed over to the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner through a third party, as confirmed by corporation officials.

The sudden resignation and the subsequent scramble for the mayoral post have raised eyebrows in political circles. The coming days are expected to see intense political maneuvering as aspirants attempt to secure the support of the party leadership for this key position in one of Tamil Nadu's most important cities.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the DMK leadership to see who will be chosen to lead Coimbatore Corporation in the wake of Kalpana Anandakumar's unexpected departure.
