AITUC members go on a hunger strike, discontented with the daily wages of Valparrai tea estate workers. They held the strike at Valparrai’s old bus stand. More than 50 members took part in the protest, supporting the cause. Some of the prominent members involved are, Arumugam, former MLA of the Marxist party; Govindarajan, guest leader and Mohan, General Secretary. Other members include- Manikkam, Chinnapan, Jeevanandham, Balakrishnan and Annadurai. AITUC members demand a daily wage of over Rs.450. Currently, the tea estate worker of Kerala earn a minimum daily wage of Rs.300.

Earlier, AITUC had filed a case against the BJP, as during one of his speeches, Arumugam, had made a couple of statements accusing BJP leader and Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Following this, BJP members caused chaos in the public arena by cutting off the audio lines and conducting other riotous activities. Likewise, BJP General Secretary, Karthik has filed a case against the AITUC with regard to the same issue.
