Semmozhi Poonga Development in Coimbatore Gains Momentum

The development of Semmozhi Poonga on the premises of the old central jail in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, has been accelerated, with the park expected to provide educational and recreational benefits.

Coimbatore: The ambitious project of developing Semmozhi Poonga, a botanical garden, has progressed significantly on the old Coimbatore Central Jail land in Gandhipuram, initially announced during the DMK government in 2010. Spanning 45 acres, this project aims to transform the decommissioned jail site into a green haven in the heart of the city.

Following a government change, the project was stalled but has been revitalized under the current DMK regime. The jail has been relocated near Karumadai, and comprehensive studies for the park's development were initiated last year by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

Currently, construction activities are in full swing, with officials emphasizing the park's role in education, environmental management, and public recreation. City Commissioner Ma. Sivaguru Prabhakaran recently noted that the park would be of international standards, meant to inspire awareness and protection of nature among the public while providing a space for educational research and leisure activities.

Featuring a variety of thematic gardens such as Kurinji Vanam, Semmozhi Vanam, and Herbal Garden, Semmozhi Poonga will also have facilities like auditoriums, open theatres, multi-level parking, shops, restrooms, and outdoor exercise areas. The project is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.
