Mild Earthquakes Strike Thrissur on Consecutive Days

Two mild earthquakes, magnitudes 3.0 and 2.9, hit Thrissur, Kerala on June 15 and 16, causing slight damages and prompting safety measures by local authorities.

Thrissur: Kerala’s Thrissur district experienced two successive mild earthquakes on June 15 and June 16, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The first tremor, striking at 8:15 AM on Saturday, registered a magnitude of 3.0, followed by a 2.9 magnitude earthquake early at 3:55 AM on Sunday, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

Residents in areas including Kunnamkulam, Erumapetty, Veloor, and Wadakkanchery felt the tremors which lasted a few seconds. Reports indicated significant cracks in the walls of some buildings in Kunnamkulam. There were also unconfirmed reports of tremors felt in neighboring Palakkad.

In response to the seismic activity, Kerala State Disaster Management issued several safety tips for the public: to repair any damaged utilities, securely anchor large appliances, stay calm, assess the situation before evacuating, avoid danger from falling objects, take cover under sturdy furniture during tremors, evacuate injured individuals to medical facilities, and perform CPR if needed.
