Heavy Rains Prompt Ban on Swimming in Valparai Rivers for Tourists

Due to continuous heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats, water levels in rivers around Valparai have risen, prompting local authorities to ban swimming for tourists as a precautionary measure.

Coimbatore: Following announcements from the Meteorological Department about ongoing heavy rains in the Western Ghats, Valparai and its surrounding regions have experienced significant rainfall recently. Heavy downpours that began yesterday morning have continued, leading to increased water levels in local rivers.

The rise in water flow, notably observed in the Koozhangal River where water levels significantly spiked post-noon, has raised concerns. In response, Valparai's Revenue Officer Vasudevan, along with Police Inspector Anandakumar, conducted inspections in the river areas.

As a safety measure, authorities have now imposed a ban on swimming and visiting certain water bodies including Koozhangal River, Chinnakallar Falls, and Boat House. Officials have warned that legal actions will be taken against those who violate this order. The ban will remain in effect until further notice as a precaution against the unpredictable river currents induced by the heavy rainfall.
