Fish Prices Surge at Ukkadam Wholesale Fish Market in Coimbatore

The Ukkadam Wholesale Fish Market in Coimbatore sees a significant price hike due to reduced supply from Tamil Nadu coastal districts following the fishing ban that started on May 15.

Coimbatore: A noticeable increase in fish prices has been reported at the Ukkadam Wholesale Fish Market in Coimbatore, following a supply drop due to the annual fishing ban in Tamil Nadu. Fish arrivals from Thoothukudi, Rameswaram, Nagapattinam as well as from states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Gujarat are still active. However, the ban, effective from May 15, has significantly reduced the influx from local coastal districts.

The typical cost of popular fish types like Vanjaram, usually sold between Rs. 700 to 800, has surged to Rs. 1200, and Mathi is now selling for Rs. 180 to 200 in the wholesale circles. This upward trend in prices began on May 19 and is anticipated to continue as no significant supplies from Tamil Nadu are expected until after May 30. Post this date, the onset of the fishing ban in Kerala and Karnataka is likely to keep the prices elevated.
