Karpagam College of Engineering Hosts SERB Sponsored Quantum Computing Workshop

Karpagam College of Engineering in Coimbatore conducted a two-day workshop on Quantum Computing Ecosystem and Applications on May 8 and 9, 2024, with numerous experts speaking on advancements and applications in quantum computing.



Coimbatore: Department of Science and Humanities organized two days’ workshop on “Quantum Computing Ecosystem and Applications” on 8 th and 9 th May 2024.



Around 100 participants from various educational institutions across the India were enthusiastically participated in the workshop.



The Day 1 sessions commenced with the rendition of the Tamil Thai vazlthu, and Dr.S.Vijayakumar, Head of the Science and Humanities Department, extended a warm welcome to all attendees. Dr.V.Kumar Chinnaiyan, the Principal of Karpagam College of Engineering Inaugurated the event and delivered presidential address. Following that, L. Gowrisankar, Assistant Professor of Chemistry introduced the speaker of the session I Dr. Dr. Jayakumar Vaithiyashankar, B.Tech, M.E, PhD, Senior IEEE Member, Bangalore.

The speaker of the session delivered his talk on “Quantum Computing Ecosystem: Quantum gates and circuits”, in which he elaborately explained how the quantum gates and circuits are important in quantum computing and how to create the quantum circuits and gate. Further he explained that, unlike classical computing, which relies on bits to represent data and perform logical operations, quantum computing uses quantum bits, or qubits, which can represent multiple states simultaneously. Finally, the session ends with vote of thanks by Dr.A.Shamadhani Begum, Assistant Professor of Mathematics.

Dr.Jan Goetz, Co-CEO, IQM, Quantum Computers, Finland graced as speaker for sesiion II. He delivered his presentation in “Fast Lane to Quantum Advantage”. In his talk he explained the advantage of quantum computers over classis computers and the role of quantum computers in solving real world problems. He concludes by emphasizing that quantum advantage and supremacy is the holy grail of quantum computing. At the end of the second session II, Manju, Assistant Professor of English delivered the vote of thanks.

The third session of Day I was on “Introduction to Quantum Computers” and was delivered by the speaker Rajarshi Biswas, Scientist-E, DYSL-QT, Pune. In his talk, he elucidated the basic concepts of quantum computing and how it takes the advantage of quantum mechanics to solve the complex problems that classical computers or supercomputers can't solve. He gave the participants a basic understanding of quantum computing at the end of his talk. Finally, Day I of the workshop end with the vote of thanks by Dr. S. Meiyazhagan, Assistant Professor of Physics.

The Day II of the workshop begins with the formal welcome address by Dr.S.Vijayakumar., Head of Science and Humanities Department. He introduced the speaker of session I Dr. Apoorva Patel, MSc., PhD.,Professor, IISc Bangalore. The speaker addresses the gathering and delivered his presentation on “Quantum Algorithms”. He described the how the quantum computers are designed to outperform standard computers by running quantum algorithms and applications of quantum algorithms in cryptography, search and optimization, simulation of quantum systems and solving large systems of linear equations. S.Padmavathi, Assistant professor of physics gave vote of thanks for the session I.

Dr Dr,S.Vijayakumar, Head of Science and Humanities Department starts the session II by delivering welcome address and he introduced the speaker of the session Dr. R. P. Sing, Professor, Quantum Technologies, (QuTe) Laboratory, PRL, Ahmedabad. His area of specialization was “Application of Quantum Computers: Quantum Space Communication”. He specified that optimization of spacecraft trajectories is one of the key areas where quantum computing's potential. He makes clear how the satellites works based on quantum key distribution and finally he actively interacted with the students and clarified their queries. Dr.T.Krishnaveni, Assistant professor of chemistry expressed the vote of thanks to the gathering. Dr. Saptarishi Chaudhuri, Associate Professor, Raman Research Institute, Bangalore was the speaker of session III. He delivered his talk on the topic “Quantum Technologies Using Ultra-Cold Trapped Atoms”.

He explained how the ultracold atoms offer excellent sensory information about the magnetic, electric, inertial, and gravitational environments within which the atoms reside and thus quantum sensors based on ultra-cold atoms have the potential to significantly impact a variety of military and civilian applications. He deeply explains how the quantum technologies rely on ultra-cold trapped atoms. Finally, the session ends with vote of thanks by Dr.R.Mariappan, Associate Professor of Mathematics.

The last session of Day 2 was on the topic “Designing quantum circuits using IBM's Qiskit” and which was addressed by the speaker Dr. S. Manjula Gandhi, IBM Qiskit, Advocate Associate Professor CIT, Coimbatore. The speaker was introduced by Dr. S.Vijayakumar, Head of Science and Humanities Department. Qiskit is an open source framework for quantum

computing and she explained how to create and manipulate quantum programs and run them on prototype quantum devices on IBM Q. She also clearly explained the primary version of Qiskit uses the Python programming language.

At the end of session, certificates were distributed to the participants and the workshop end by national anthem.
