YouTuber 'Savukku' Shankar Remanded to Judicial Custody Until May 22

YouTuber 'Savukku' Shankar, arrested by Coimbatore Cyber Crime Police on May 4 for defaming police personnel, is remanded in judicial custody until May 22. Shankar raises concerns about his safety in Coimbatore jail.


Coimbatore: YouTuber 'Savukku' Shankar, known for his critical views on government and police, was remanded to judicial custody until May 22, following his arraignment in a special court in Madurai dealing with narcotics. Shankar was initially arrested on May 4 in Theni district by the Coimbatore Cyber Crime Police on charges of defaming female police officers. Subsequent to his arrest, an additional case was filed against him for possessing marijuana.




During the court proceedings in front of Judge Sengamalaselvan, Shankar claimed that he was assaulted by 10 prison guards in Coimbatore jail and expressed concerns about his safety there. He also requested to be transferred to either Madurai or Thanjavur jail and alleged that he was confined in a cell designated for mentally challenged individuals.






Responding to Shankar's requests, the judge stated that he did not have the authority to order a transfer between prisons and advised Shankar to seek a resolution through official channels with the prison department. Following the hearing, Shankar was taken back to Coimbatore jail where he will remain till the next court date.
