Comprehensive Desilting of Bhavani Dam Announced by Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati announced the complete desilting of the Bhavani Dam, which is crucial for the city's water needs. This follows concerns about reduced capacity due to sediment accumulation.

Coimbatore: In a significant development for water management in Coimbatore, the Bhavani Dam, a crucial source of drinking water for the city, is set to undergo comprehensive desilting. Having been operational since 1966 and not desilted for over 55 years, the dam's capacity has been significantly reduced. Last year, assessments showed that sediment had filled up to 70% of the dam's capacity, posing a severe threat to the water supply for Coimbatore.

In response to public concern and expectations for desilting, a coordination meeting held at the Coimbatore Collector's office detailed the desilting plans. District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati announced the decision, emphasizing the acquisition of expert opinions from World Bank consultants to ensure efficient execution of the desilting process. This move is aimed to restore the dam's full capacity and secure a sustainable water source for the city.
