Saibaba Colony Flyover Construction Works to be Completed Soon - Highway Department Officials

Highway Department officials announced that the Saibaba Colony flyover construction in Coimbatore has reached 95 percent completion. The remaining works include ramp construction at Erukampeni, installing streetlights, and painting. The flyover is expected to be operational by June 2025.

Coimbatore: The Saibaba Colony flyover construction works in Coimbatore are nearing completion and will be opened for public use soon, according to Highway Department officials. The project, which began in September 2024, has reached its final stages.

In Coimbatore city, the Raundana junction connecting Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, and RS Puram areas is a crucial location experiencing heavy traffic congestion. Similarly, the Mettupalayam Road witnesses significant traffic snarls throughout the day.

To address this issue, the flyover construction work at Saibaba Colony has been progressing steadily. The project has now reached its final phase, and officials are taking necessary steps to make it operational by June this year.

Over the past 20 years, Coimbatore has experienced a massive increase in population density, leading to severe traffic congestion at multiple locations across the city. To control this congestion, infrastructure facilities have been moderately improved over the last 15 years. Several flyovers have been constructed, including the 10 km-long flyover on Avinashi Road, Ramanathapuram flyover, Gandhipuram flyover, Neelambur flyover, Ukkadam flyover, Thudiyalur flyover, and Athupalam flyover. These flyovers have helped control traffic congestion to a considerable extent in various parts of the city.

Similarly, on the heavily congested Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road, it was decided to construct flyovers at four locations: Saibaba Colony, G.N. Mills, Kaundampalayam, and Periyanaickenpalayam. Except for Saibaba Colony, flyovers at the other three locations have been completed and made operational. The Saibaba Colony flyover construction work commenced in September 2024 at a cost of Rs 75 crore. The flyover spans 1.2 km from Ganga Hospital to Erukampeni.

Initially, the construction work progressed very slowly, causing hardship to motorists and commuters. The Collector then instructed Highway Department officials to expedite the flyover work. Following this directive, the construction work was undertaken intensively.

High-tension electric cables that were obstructing the flyover construction were relocated. Currently, the final phase of construction work is progressing rapidly. Once completed, the flyover will be opened for public use.

Speaking about this, Coimbatore Highway Department officials said, "The Saibaba Colony flyover construction work is 95 percent complete. A ramp needs to be constructed at the Erukampeni section. Additionally, some pending works include installing streetlights on the flyover and painting. Once these works are completed, we plan to open the flyover for public use in June."

The completion of this flyover is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on the busy Mettupalayam Road corridor and provide smoother connectivity for commuters traveling between various parts of the city.
