Ammonia Leak at a Chips Factory Leads to Evacuation of 300 Families Near Karamadai, Coimbatore

An ammonia gas leak at a chips manufacturing facility in Chenniveerampalayam near Karamadai led to the evacuation of 300 families on April 29 due to health issues like breathing difficulties and eye irritation.


Coimbatore: A serious incident occurred at an inactive private potato chips manufacturing plant in Chenniveerampalayam near Karamadai, which has been non-operational for the past eight years. Recently, efforts to reinitiate chip production led to an unforeseen ammonia gas leak from a stored cylinder on April 29, spreading across the vicinity.




The leak caused severe discomfort to the local residents, including breathing difficulties and eye irritation, prompting an immediate evacuation of around 300 families to safer locations.




Upon receiving the information, the Karamadai police and 108 Emergency Service teams provided medical assistance to the affected. To prevent any further incidents, the police conducted an investigation at the site while the Fire Department sprayed water around the area as a precautionary measure against potential fire hazards.




An extensive security measure was put in place, with over 30 police officers deployed to ensure the safety and facilitate the ongoing investigation by the Karamadai Police. The evacuated families were temporarily relocated by the authorities, highlighting a swift response to the emergency situation.
