The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation announces the commencement of water supply under the ₹779 crore Pillur III Joint Drinking Water Supply project on 11th February, aiming to meet the city's needs until 2035.

Coimbatore: The Commissioner of Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, Sivaguru Prabhakaran, has announced the initiation of the Pillur III Joint Drinking Water Supply Project, set to begin on February 11. This ₹779 crore project, undertaken by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, is designed to ensure uninterrupted water supply to meet the needs of Coimbatore's population by the year 2035.

Utilizing the Bhavani River as the source, the project has established a main water intake station at Murugaiyan Parihal area costing ₹134 crore. From there, water is pumped over a distance of 16 kilometers to Marudur, where a water purification plant with a capacity of 178 MLD (million liters per day) has been constructed at a cost of ₹104.90 crore.

The water is then transported another 16 kilometers to Cotton Hill, where it is distributed to various municipal areas through a network that includes a 900-meter-long pipeline to Pannimadai. Trial runs of this elaborate distribution system are currently in the final stages.

The commencement of water distribution through the Pillur III Joint Drinking Water Supply Project marks a significant milestone in addressing the long-term water needs of Coimbatore’s residents. This initiative is part of the city's broader efforts to modernize and expand its infrastructure to ensure sustainable water resources for the future.
