TPDK Member Arrested in Coimbatore for Derogatory Social Media Post

Kattoor police arrested Ranjithkumar, a TPDK member for posting derogatory content on Facebook, challenging the Madras High Court's order regarding temple entry regulations, leading to allegations of inciting religious animosity.

Coimbatore: In a significant enforcement of law pertaining to religious harmony, the Kattoor police apprehended a 40-year-old member of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK), identified as Ranjithkumar from Siddhapudur, Coimbatore. The arrest, made on Wednesday night, was due to a controversial post on Facebook that criticized the Madras High Court's directive for Hindu temples to display notices stating 'Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple beyond the flagpole' (kodimaram).

The complaint leading to Ranjithkumar's arrest came from M Ruthram Muthu, aged 43, president of Bharat Sena. Muthu accused Ranjithkumar of deliberately using the social media platform to foster religious hatred and disrupt peace and religious harmony. According to the complaint, the post was perceived as an attempt to ignite religious animosity and disturb public tranquility.

Following the complaint, police action was swift, leading to the registration of a case against Ranjithkumar under Section 295 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religion or religious beliefs. The legal process culminated in Ranjithkumar's remand to judicial custody, highlighting the serious consequences of using social media to spread derogatory and inflammatory content that targets religious sentiments and community peace.
