An all party meet was convened in the city to discuss on the Kerala check dam issue over the Bhavani River. Members of the Bhavani River Protection Council along with district representatives of all prominent political parties took part in the meet.
Speaking at the meet, K. Ramakrishnan, General Secretary of Thandhai Periyar Dravida Kalagam (TPDK) said, 'The ill-handling of the check dam issue by the Tamil Nadu government has been the sole reason for the continuation of the project by the Kerala Government. Tamil Nadu government's ineptness has failed to put enough pressure on the Central Government and to provide legal evidences in the Court to halt the check dam project. At least now, the TN Government should re-appeal in the Supreme Court seeking stay order on the check dam issue.
This check dam issue across Bhavani river is a very serious problem, as farmers from Coimbatore Tirupur and Erode districts will face severe water scarcity issues. Hence, all parties have decided to conduct a massive hunger-strike protest on the 30th March to condemn the Tamil Nadu Government for failing to protect the people's welfare and the Central Government for unnecessarily delaying to frame the Cauvery Management Tribunal. We have also decided to meet the Kerala Chief Minister on the check dam issue', K. Ramakrishnan from TPDK said.
