Pongal Holiday Rush: Coimbatore Bus Stations Overwhelmed as Locals Head Home for Pongal Holidays

With the Pongal festival holidays approaching, Coimbatore's bus stations are crowded with residents eager to travel to their hometowns for the celebrations.

As the Pongal festival draws near, with celebrations starting from January 15th and continuing until January 17th, Coimbatore's bus stations are bustling with activity. The anticipation of Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal has prompted schools, colleges, and government offices to declare holidays starting January 13th, leading to an early weekend rush as students and working professionals head home.




To accommodate the influx of travelers, bus routes have been adjusted. Buses to Madurai and Theni are now operating from Singanallur bus station, those to Karur and Trichy from Sulur bus station, and services to Erode, Salem, and Namakkal from Gandhipuram Central Bus Station. Additionally, new temporary bus stations have been set up to manage the increase in passengers traveling towards Ooty and Kodaikanal. Special connection buses from Gandhipuram and Ukkadam have been deployed to assist travelers in reaching these temporary stations.




In response to the holiday crowd, approximately 750 special buses have been deployed from Friday evening to facilitate the travel of outstation passengers. Particularly, the Singanallur bus station observed a significant number of travelers bound for Madurai. The police have intensified their presence to ensure safety and order amidst the bustling crowds. Traffic congestion was also reported on key roads, with traffic police working diligently to streamline the movement and alleviate congestion.
