The Seed Centre, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) organized its third Annual Seed Workshop today, 14 March at the seed Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore. Dr. K. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, Coimbatore inaugurated the programme. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. P. Selvaraju, Special Officer (Seeds), Seed Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore and he highlighted the importance of the workshop.

Dr. M. Maheswaran, Director of Research, Dr. K. Ganesamurthy, Director, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics (CPBG), TNAU, Th. C. Kalidas, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Seed Producers' Association (TNSPA), Th. R. Pandiyaraj, Joint Director of Agriculture delivered the felicitation address.

Dr. M. Bhaskaran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, Chennai and former Special Officer (Seeds), Seed Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore in his address emphasized that seed producers should be proactive in adopting the various promising technologies developed by TNAU.
Dr. K. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, Coimbatore released the workshop manual. In his presidential address he emphasized that the research activities should be strengthened for enhancing the storability of oilseeds. “Seed enhancement techniques like pelleting for facilitating mechanized sowing should be popularized. In addition, the farm implements should also be developed to suit the small size of land holdings in Tamil Nadu.” he added.

In this workshop, the importance of quality seed production was emphasized. The enhancement of breeder seed supply in various crops particularly in groundnut, maintenance of genetic purity and development of varieties with specific traits are few of the important issues which necessitated immediate action were discussed.
In the interactive session various topics which included importance of quality seed and its maintenance during multiplication, improved varieties of Agricultural crops in seed chain, scope of seed production in Horticultural crops, pre and post seed production quality control system in Tamil Nadu, NSC and its participation in seed production, contribution of private seed industries in Tamil Nadu were discussed .

The concluding remarks were delivered by Dr. P. Selvaraju, Special Officer (Seeds), Seed Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore. Dr. R. Umarani, Professor and Head, Dept. of Seed Science and Technology, TNAU, Coimbatore proposed the vote of thanks.
