Land for Coimbatore Int’l Airport expansion acquired and handed over to Airport Authority of India - Coimbatore Collector

627 acres of land required for Coimbatore airport expansion has been acquired and handed over to AAI after a long delay of 13 years. The first move to expand CBE airport was moved in 2010 by then DMK govt.

Coimbatore: Yesterday was an important day for the city of Coimbatore asthe Collector of Coimbatore issued a process order to hand over the lands required for the expansion of the Coimbatore Airport to the Airport Authority. Thus bringing to fruition the dream of expanding the airport, which has been dragging on for 14 years.

Coimbatore Airport is already an international airport operating a handful of flights but due to lack of expanded infrastructure like runways for bigger planes, the operation of foreign flights and consequently, the development of the industry was hindered. In order to solve this, in 2010, during the DMK regime, an ordinance was issued to acquire land for the expansion of the airport.

But in the decade 2011-2021, this work happened at a snail's pace. After the DMK came to power, this work picked up pace again. The airport authority had requested the Tamil Nadu government to acquire a total of 627.89 acres of land for expansion. It also has 135 acres of land belonging to the Defense Department.

In Coimbatore, the proposed acquisition of 627 acres of land for the airport expansion is located in five revenue villages of Kalapatti, Singhanallur, Irugur, Uppilipalayam and Neelambur. Out of this, 403 acres of leased land and 20.58 acres of outlying land have been acquired by the Tamil Nadu government.

Due to some reasons such as unknown owners and lack of proper documents, 69 acres have not yet been acquired. Along with the given land, alternate land should be given by the state government. But in Coimbatore no land was given to replace the Defense Department land. It was alleged that the expansion was delayed because the state government did not fully hand over the land for the airport expansion.

Putting this confusion to rest, Coimbatore Collector Krantikumar Padi issued a process order in this regard yesterday.

He also mentioned some conditions in the process order allowing the airport authority to carry out expansion work on this 627-acre land. That is, before the final agreement regarding this land is signed, the commission can carry out works including airport expansion and road for vehicles.

But before the final agreement between the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Airport Authority is entered into, this land shall not be leased or sublet; There is a condition that it should not be changed to anyone else's name. With this process order, the land for airport expansion, which has been stalled for 14 years, has been formally handed over. This order has brought joy to the Coimbatore industry.

Due to this, the airport authority can immediately take up the airport expansion work on 627 acres of land. Henceforth, the airport authority is responsible for allocating funds for the expansion and planning the work. Coimbatore's long-held dream will soon come true if the commission plans the works quickly.
