Coimbatore industry workers go on hunger strike demanding scrapping of peak electricity charge

More than 2,000 entrepreneurs from more than 70 industry bodies in three districts of Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Erode are on a token hunger strike demanding the abolition of the hiked peak hour electricity charges and fixed charges in Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: More than 70 industry associations are on a hunger strike in Coimbatore demanding the cancellation of the hike in peak hours fee in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board implemented the power tariff hike in September last year. It also increased fixed charges and peak hour charges for industries.

Despite repeated requests from the entrepreneurs to the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw it, no action has been taken. Small and medium entrepreneurs from Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Erode districts formed the Tamil Nadu Industrial Power Consumers Federation.

On behalf of this organisation, a token hunger strike is being held at karanampettai in Tirupur district on Thursday. More than 2000 entrepreneurs from more than 70 organisations from Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts have participated in the hunger strike.

During the hunger strike, it was urged to cancel the hike in the status fee and peak hour fee.

Despite repeated representations to the Electricity Board, the Regulatory Commission and the Tamil Nadu ministers, no action has been taken. The organisers of the federation said that the hunger strike is being held to draw the attention of the government and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

The protesting entrepreneurs have urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to directly intervene in the matter and till then they will continue to protest.
