Behind the Airtel head office on Avinashi Road is the Lexus Regency Apartment. Right outside this apartment complex around a dozen trees stood on either sides of the road. Taxi drivers would park their vehicles under the blanket of shade that these trees offered. Pedestrians who used this stretch of road would also take advantage of the shady cover of these trees. However, all this has disappeared. The barren trees stand and way above them are the tower lines that have been erected by the Electricity Board. It has been reported that last Friday, the residents of the Lexus Regency Apartment experienced a power cut. This prompted them to call the EB officials to restore power. EB officials looked around and noticed the over-grown trees. These trees are of native species we are told. What happened next sent shock waves down the spine of environmentalists and the ordinary citizens.

“The officials from the EB mercilessly chopped a major portion of these trees. The officials instead of planning and cutting only as much as what is required, heartlessly chopped a major section of the trees to the trees as per their convenience. These are the trees that I once planted and nurtured. I have always ensured that their respective branches are trimmed on time, so that they do not come in the way of the overhead EB lines. However, this time, I was not around when this incident took place and this has coasted a lot.” Ramesh Babu, one of the residents of the Lexus Regency Apartment said.

With pain in his heart and tears in his eyes, Ramesh Babu shares with SimpliCity that it will take almost three long years and a lot of hard work to bring back the trees to their original shape and size. This process has begun. “I have put in funds from my pocket and have ensured that the trees are treated so that they do not develop any infection and I will put in extra effort to ensure that these native trees grow.”
An environmentalist who is associated with leading NGOs in the city, Ramesh Babu says that it is high time that stringent laws are in place to ensure that a repeat of this incident does not happen in other parts of our city.
