Inspection for construction of new central prison for Coimbatore near Mettupalayam

A Tamil classical language (Semmozhi) park will be set up on the land belonging to the current central jail in Gandhipuram area of Coimbatore. The district administration had recommended the construction of a new prison at Bilichi in Mettupalayam. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Amudha had visited the spot to take stock of the situation.



A study was carried out for setting up of a new prison under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary (Home) The district collector interviewed that a proposal was made for the construction of the Modern Prison.

The district administration had recommended the construction of a new prison at Bilichi in Mettupalayam. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Amudha had visited the spot to take stock of the situation.

The inspection was carried out inside the Coimbatore Central Jail premises for more than 2 hours. In this study, various aspects including the existing facilities, security facilities and the training imparted to the inmates in coimbatore central jail have been examined.

Earlier, an inspection was carried out in the Bilichi area of Mettupalayam.



Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Badrinarayanan, Coimbatore Central Prisons Superintendent Urmila, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Shanmugasundaram and other officials were present during the inspection.



Additional Secretary (Home) Amudha handed over the books to Jail Superintendent Urmila on the occasion.

Coimbatore Prison is a prison built during the British period with various security features. Therefore, it was suggested to upgrade the structures here on the lines or even more.

Speaking to reporters on the occasion, the Coimbatore District Collector said, "We had sent a recommendation for another place as the classical park would be set up on the land belonging to coimbatore central jail. Accordingly, Additional Secretary (Home) Amudha conducted an inspection of the construction of the prison at Bilichi in Mettupalayam. The new jail to be constructed in the area should be constructed with all the facilities required for the future. Apart from the Coimbatore prison, various training programmes are being imparted to the inmates here.

It was developed and constructed in Mettupalayam to suit the future. He also inspected the jail that is currently being constructed in Telangana and a consultation and study was carried out for the construction of the Modern Prison with all the facilities. There is already about 8 acres of government land in Bilichi. The land will be acquired if required. No human rights study has been carried out in the jail today, he said.
