Creative eco-friendly cloth bags created during the 'Making of Cloth Bags' session organised by Brookefield Wonder Women forum

In an initiative by 'Brookefield Women Wonder' forum, this afternoon close to hundred socially-responsible women gathered at the Brookefield Mall to take part in the hands on workshop on making cloth bags. The Women Wonder group that came into action a week ago aims at pooling women from various genres and using their expertise on specific issues to create awareness and influence social change.

The group of enterprising women of the forum flagged off their debut session on 'Terrace gardening' by Chitra Krishnaswamy, on 3rd March, 2017 for which participants from other than the group also took part and gained insights on terrace gardening, especially composting.

Today, at the second session on 'Workshop of Making Cloth Bags' members from various other groups like 'My shopping My bag' actively contributed in teaching and learning the technique of making cloth bag.

Corporation Commissioner Dr.K. Vijayakarthikeyan paid a surprise visit to the cloth making workshop and interacted with the women and encouraged them to spread this art of making cloth bags to the non-participants as well.

He also urged that people should inculcate the habit of carrying cloth bags while shopping for their regular needs so that usage of plastic bags could be minimised gradually.

The mission of today's session was to create awareness among the ill-effects of using plastic bags and carry cloth bags for shopping. The team of experts today demonstrated live sessions to the participants on making of beautiful cloth bags out of unused sarees (cotton), bed sheets, screen clothes in a very fun-filled and innovative way.

Just with a pair of scissors, needle and unused cloth, the participants created magic by creating cloth attractive bags of various sizes. Cloth bags were also created without needle, using knotting method.  The session not only created awareness but also proved to be brainstorming platform for people to interact with each other and share their ideas on alternatives that could replace plastics.

Sure, these women who learnt the art of making eco-friendly cloth bags from this session would spread this motto to several other people belonging to their locale, family and friends. Through which the concept of 'Say No to plastic bags' and creating eco-friendly cloth bags could be spread to a wider population in the city, ultimately directing towards a 'real change'!

Followed by the success of today's meet the Women Wonders group has planned to host a session on 'Women Safety' on 7th March, 2017 in which Deputy Commissioner (Law & Order) will take address the women participants.
