Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) launched the first stroke unit in Asia today. The new mobile unit will be used in the emergency cases for treated the patients affected by stroke before being brought to the hospital. This will help in improving the survival rate of the patients and will give a new a chance of life for those who are affected by this silent disease.

Mobile Stroke Units are specialized ambulances in which a nurse, paramedic, emergency personnel and CT technologist will be present. The unit also contains lab testing equipment and a CT scanner, which is required to diagnose the type of stroke.

A stroke physician who will be stationed at the hospital will evaluate each patient via telemedicine and a neuroradiologist remotely assess the CT images. Two way video conferencing will allow communication with the patient, family and stroke experts.

The CT image is an important diagnostic test distinguishing a hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke from ischemic stroke (blood clot blocking vessels and blood flow). The treatment for these types of strokes is different, and cannot be started until the CT scan is complete.
Shahul Hameed a patient who was affected by stroke which immobilised him. He was brought to the Emergency Department and in the next 30 minutes, a CT Scan and MRI revealed a block in the basilar artery primary blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain stem. The operation was performed and the blood clot in his blood vessels in the brain was removed successfully. According to a press release issued by this hospital, the patient was able to move his limbs without any problem after the procedure was performed in him.
