The Madurai branch of Chennai High Court has ordered the removal of Seemai Karuvelam (Proposis Julifora) trees from Tamilnadu following a Public Interest petition that was filed in the court seeking the abolition of the plant species as its is heavily dependent on ground water for its survival. The judges who heard this petition ordered the Tamilnadu government to remove the Seemai Karuvelam (Proposis Julifora) trees from all over Tamilnadu.

Following this High Court order the Seemai Karuvelam (Proposis Julifora) trees are being removed from all over the Tamilnadu through various drives. In Coimbatore the Sulur Lake restoration and management group members numbering 25 along with people, heads and representatives of various NGOs hosted a meeting last week. More than 200 people participated in this meeting.

At this meeting it was decided to remove the Seemai Karuvelam (Proposis Julifora) trees that have grown in the water bodies and the surrounding areas. As part of the drive the removal of the trees from the Sulur and surrounding areas began today. President of the RVS educational institutions inaugurated this clean up drive.

12 JCB machines in two teams were involved in the removal of the trees from Sulur and its surrounding water bodies. Members of various political parties from Sulur, public welfare organisations, people, and students were involved in this drive. All water bodies management group have stated that the removal of Seemai Karuvelam (Proposis Julifora) will continue.
