100 sovereigns of jewellery looted in Coimbatore; Lookout notice issued to airports to nab young girl

Rajeshwari who is involved in the real estate business was reportedly given sleeping pills by a young woman at her Puliakulam residence in Coimbatore. The police have sent a lookout notice to airports to nab the young woman Varshini (26) who is absconding, in connection with the Rs. 2.5 crore cash and 100 sovereigns of gold jewellery robbery.

Coimbatore: Police have launched a crackdown on a woman involved in the cheating and robbery case of a real estate business person.

Rajeshwari (63), a resident of Greenfield Colony in Puliakulam area of Coimbatore has been involved in real estate business in the area. Her husband Venkatesan died 19 years ago. Rajeshwari's eldest daughter is married and lives with her husband in a foreign country while her second daughter is living abroad due to work. Hence, Rajeshwari lives alone in her residence in Puliyakulam area of the city.

Rajeshwari became acquainted with Varshini (26), a resident of Singanallur in Coimbatore, three years ago. She often spoke to Rajeshwari on the phone and always enquired kindly about her well-being.

Varshini has also helped Rajeshwari in the real estate business since then by selling land to some people. Varshini has often visited Rajeshwari's house to talk about issues of buying and selling land, as well as took care of her. She even used to feed Rajeshwari.

Rajeshwari hence completely trusted and loved Varshini as she would her daughters. On the night of March 20, Varshini reportedly visited Rajeshwari and told her that she had brought some idli and country chicken curry for her. Shortly after consuming the food brought by Varshini, Rajeshwari felt dizzy and assuming that she was only sleepy, she is said to have laid down on a sofa in the living room of the house. She suddenly woke up groggy at 12.30 midnight and saw Varshini emerging out of her bedroom.

When she questioned Varshini on this, Varshini reportedly told her that she had gone in to use the restroom. Rajeshwari then went into her bedroom and was shocked to see a young man standing there and asked Varshini, "Who is this person? What is going on here?" Varshini reportedly rendered some explanation and excused herself, and left with the man in a car.

Thereafter, Rajeshwari, who was still groggy fell asleep again. When she woke up in the morning, she was shocked to find Rs. 2 and a half crore in cash, 100 pounds of jewellery and an expensive mobile phone missing from her cupboard in the bedroom. THe valuables are said to total more than Rs. 3 crore. Rajeshwari immediately contacted Varshini's mobile phone but found it had been switched off. It was only thereafter that she realised that her food had been mixed with sedatives to loot her jewellery and money.

Rajeshwari later lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore Ramanathapuram police about the robbery. Following this, the police registered a case and a special squad was formed to nab the robbers. During the investigation, it was found that Varshini along with four others, including Arun Kumar (37), a real estate business owner in Ponneri in Thiruvallur district, had conspired and executed the robbery.

The police arrested Arun Kumar, Praveen (32) and Surender (25) at Ponneri since both were residents of Ponneri. Rs. 35 lakh and 31 sovereigns of jewellery were seized from them. The three men who were arrested were later produced before the Court and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Jail.

Meanwhile, police are on the lookout for Varshini and her car driver Naveen Kumar, who are absconding. The special cell police have launched a thorough investigation to recover the remaining jewellery and cash. The Coimbatore city police have sent lookout notices to the airports to prevent the duo from fleeing to foreign countries.
