SNS Engineering College is located at Valiyampalayam, near Karatumedu. A canal that is used for agricultural purposes is located along the boundary walls of this college. During rainy season, the rain water is automatically drained into the agricultural lands through this canal thereby facilitating the villagers to use this water for irrigating their fields which is predominantly Banana and Cholam crops.
It has been reported that the private college has encroached this irrigation canal. The college also lets sewage water into this canal at another location. Residents and farmers of this are continuously protesting against the college management for obstructing the canal's pathway, but so far, no action has been taken in this regard, say the residents.
The people of Valiyampalayam area, today submitted a petition to the District Collector, TN Hariharan for restoring the canal from the private college. In the petition, they have stated that during heavy or persistent rains, the rain water will enter the residential areas due to the obstruction made on the canal. Hence, the petitioners requested that the District Administration should intervene in this issue and take necessary steps against the College and retrieve the canal from encroachment.
