Paramvah Studios Pvt Ltd, producers and owners of copyright to the Kannada feature film ‘Kirik Party’, has filed a complaint against unidentified people for violation of their copyright.
A representative of the company, which is also involved in production of cinematography and musical works, in the complaint has alleged that it has come to their notice that many individuals and groups are illegally uploading certain scenes of the films like songs, movie clippings, dialogues and other parts of the film onto various social media and online platforms such as YouTube, Facebbok, Vimeo, etc.
They have claimed it has resulted in severe financial losses to the company and that they have also approached YouTube and other online social platforms to remove the movie songs and scenes, which are illegally uploaded by unscrupulous copyright infringers.
Kirik Party, which released in the last week of December 2016, is one of the biggest commercial hits in Sandalwood. Even in its 9th week, the film is going strong at the box office and reports claim that it will become only the third Kannada film ever to gross over Rs 50 crore at the box office.
The film has Rakshit Shetty playing the lead role. The film, about the happenings in an engineering college, has become a sensation with the youth.
The film’s publicity was mostly done online in social networks. Ironically, the very medium is now turning out to be an obstacle to the film in making profits by violating copyright.
The representative has alleged that despite requesting online social media platforms, no action was taken by YouTube or Facebook till date, due to which they claim to have continued to suffer huge financial losses every day, and the copyright over the aforesaid movie continues to be infringed repeatedly.
“We have registered a case under the Copyright Act, 1975, under section 63 and Information Technology Act, 2008, under section 66. The complaint was registered a few days ago and we have also approached the online social media platforms to provide us the information of those who have uploaded the move scenes or songs as alleged by the complainant.
We have not yet received any update pertaining to the possible copyright infringers,” said an officer who is part of the investigations. Kiran Kumar, the authorised signatory on behalf of Paramvah Studios, filed a complaint with the KS Layout police.
The film was released in the movie theatres worldwide on December 30, 2016, and is running successfully in theatres throughout Karnataka, besides in the Middle-East, USA, Singapore and in several European countries.
“There is no clear picture on the intensity and the magnitude of the losses suffered by them because of the illegal uploading of the movie scenes and songs by certain unknown people,” the officer added.
