'Industrial sector to prevent the spread of Covid-19 by adopting screening and strict preventive measures' say Industry bodies

Coimbatore: Even as the coronavirus cases have increased across the country, it is said that precautionary measures are being taken in full swing in the industrial units and establishments in Coimbatore district.

The industry insiders say that regular corona testing is being carried out among its employees to check the spread.

Precautionary measures are being taken vigorously in industrial units in the district which number over n 1.5 lakh registered industrial units.

The district is a hub of MSME sector, and it is being operated in different parts of the district with about 8 lakh worker force. The industrial sector is also a major employer in the region.

Following the outbreak of coronavirus in 2020, all industries faced a severe crisis due to the complete lockdown imposed then and the restrictive situation that prevailed thereafter.

Nallathambi, President of the Coimbatore SIDCO Industrial Estate Manufacturers' Welfare Association (COSIEMA), said, “ When the industries have started recovering from the impact of corona, the spread of infection is a worrisome factor. We have intensified precautionary and preventive measures to check the rise in cases”.

“The body temperature of the workers is checked daily. Guidelines, including masks and social distancing, are being strictly adhered to” he added.

Surulivel, Vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA), said, Various issues, including the rise in raw materials prices that prevailed for more than a year and a half following the first wave of Covid-19. It is only now that industries are slowly returning to normalcy

“Apart from the daily temperature checks being carried out, measures such as pulse oxygen levels, mandatory wearing of face masks, social distancing in areas including canteens. have also been made mandatory” he said.

“The workers are also fully cooperating with such measures. All industries in Coimbatore district will be put to a standstill if the spread of covid-19 increases again and production gets stalled” he said.
