As drought prevails in many districts in Tamil Nadu due to monsoon failure, reports indicate that a drastic reduction of ground water. Hence, agriculture and those using bore well for drawing water have been experiencing disappointment as their bore wells are unable to suck the water from the ground, as the water table levels have gone down.
This drought has not spared Coimbatore which is regarded as one of the water rich cities in Tamil Nadu.
The storage level at Siruvani dam, Athikadavu dam, Bhavani Dam, Azhiyar dams which are the prime water source for Coimbatore, Pollachi, Tiruppur and Salem has now reached the tipping point. As the ground water level has also decreased, people are engaged in digging new bore wells and deepening their existing ones. Amidst this water crisis, digging new bore wells will turn detrimental.
Considering the veracity of the situation, Coimbatore district administration has banned sinking of new bore wells in the district. However, there are no restrictions laid to maintain the old bore wells.
