Landslide blocks state highway near Kotagiri, debris scattered for 200 meters

Ongoing traffic has been disrupted due to a landslide on the state highway in Kookalthurai village next to Kotagiri. High ways department officials and workers are busy removing scattered rocks and debris.



The Nilgiris: There are more than 10 villages in the Kookalthurai area of the Nilgiris district. The people of these villages are using the state highway passing through Uyilatti to reach Kotagiri and Mettupalayam.



A landslide occurred on the highway in Uyilatti area, due to which fallen debris scattered over 200 meters and road has been blocked.

“Traffic has been severely affected due to accumulation of rocks and mud on the road due to the landslide” said reliable sources.

“Agricultural lands were affected by the landslide-hit area and people living in 13 nearby villages are forced to travel to Kotagiri via an alternative route” the sources added.



Meanwhile, the state highways department is in the process of clearing the rocks and debris lying on the roadside and restoring traffic as quick as possible.



Meanwhile, a complaint has been lodged on the owners of a private estate, who used JCB machine in violation of rules for the construction of a canal, which may have caused the landslide.
